Jake and Ron welcome legendary author Christopher Paolini! Even if you don't read genre fiction, you're likely to remember the story of the young man who at the age of nineteen became a New York Times bestselling author when his first book Eragon was republished by Knopf in 2003, after a self-published debut and a grassroots marketing campaign the previous year. Paolini would go on to produce three more novels and a short story collection tied to his Inheritance Cycle , with another, Murtagh , due this coming November. Since 2002, Paolini has enthralled tens of millions of readers. And while the Inheritance Cycle is published as Young Adult fiction by Knopf, it is enjoyed by readers of all ages. This rabid fan base has earned him a citation in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest author of a bestselling series. Today I have a different kind of guest than I usually do. He's a fantasy and sci-fi author by the name of Christopher Paolini. You may be aware of his best-selling young adult fantasy book Eragon , which he wrote at the age of 15 and was also made into a major-budget film. The rest of the books in that series are Eldest , Brisingr , and Inheritance . You may also be aware of his more recent sci-fi novel called "To Sleep in a Sea of Stars" . I've been a huge fan of Christopher for a very long time, and it was an honor to pick his brain. In this episode, we talk about Christopher's writing process, the art of storytelling, the difference between young adult fiction and adult fiction, his strange path to becoming an author, the shortening of our collective attention spans, and much more.
