Two years ago, Walden Maroon outgrew his small town, his loving parents, and the low stakes mysteries involving missing butterflies and stolen cookies. Since then, he's dwelled within the cesspit of Crimeville, where murders, vice, and corruption are the city's bread and butter. But at 12 years old, Kid is weary. When a string of horrific killings and arsons spring up in the streets, can he crack the case with his quick wits and slingshot? Welcome back to Word Balloon for Part 2 of our conversation with acclaimed TV writer and comic book master Christopher Cantwell. In this episode, we spotlight two of his exciting new creator-owned projects: Out of Alcatraz from Oni Press, co-created with artist Tyler Crook — a haunting, genre-bending tale set in the shadow of the infamous prison — and Kid Maroon from Vault Comics, a twisted noir adventure brought to life with co-creator Victor Santos. We also get a sneak peek at Chris’s upcoming work on seson 3 of the AMC+ horror anthology The Terror, where he’s helping shape a chilling new chapter in one of TV’s most underrated series. It’s creator-owned comics, serialized horror, and sharp storytelling — all in Part 2 of our deep dive with Christopher Cantwell, right now on Word Balloon.
June. 1962. Two men do the impossible: break Out of Alcatraz . The legendary escape almost immediately caught the public's imagination, becoming fodder for TV, film, and prose. Maybe you've encountered a few of these stories; maybe you haven't. Whatever the case, you certainly have not read an interpretation like the Oni Press comic from Christopher Cantwell and Tyler Crook. Their Out of Alcatraz begins in the crashing waters outside the prison. From there, it dips into a storm of speculation, terror, and hope. Through their story, Cantwell and Crook explore a critical moment in the American narrative. The Civil Rights movement hasn't quite popped off. John F. Kennedy still stands righteously in the White House. The confidence of Post-war America is about to burst. Three criminals taste freedom with all its bitterness and desperately attempt to choke it down. This week's podcast considers the American story and those who were left out of it or forced from it. We chat with Cantwell and Crook about the real men who broke free from Alcatraz and the fictional men they became in Cantwell and Crook's imaginations. We discuss the allure of prison narratives and the cells we all find ourselves in at some point. Issues one and two of Out of Alcatraz are now available wherever rad comics are sold, and issue three will arrive in shops on May 21st. Continue this conversation by following Christopher Cantwell on BlueSky and Tyler Crook on BlueSky , Instagram , and his Website . Also, you can listen to his music through his Bandcamp page (although it's also available on Spotify, Apple Music, and the like). Send us Fan Mail For this season of Storied Arcs, Mike and Alex are talking about Everything. Well, not everything everything, but Everything by Christopher Cantwell and I.N.J. Culbard from Dark Horse Comics and Berger Books. The guys give a quick rundown of the of the creative team, including Cantwell's television work (like AMC's Halt and Catch Fire ) and Culbard's many collaborations with writer Dan Abnett, as well as letterer Steve Wands (who we covered in our intro to The Underwater Welder, which you can find here ) and editor Karen Berger (who we discussed in the the intro to The Seeds, here ). Then they give a short, spoiler-free synopsis of the book and hit on why they picked it for the show. Like a lot of a books we've covered recently, Everything is a "COVID book," meaning its publishing scheduled was severely effected by the disruptions in the comic industry in 2020. Issues #1-5 were published and collected in trade volume 1, but the remaining single issues that had been solicited were never printed. Instead, the remaining material, what would have been issues #6-10, were published all at once as trade volume 2. So if you're hunting down the single issues, you might still see entries for issues #6 and #7, but know that they don't actually exist. Everything is a trippy, slow burn story that takes a little while to get going, so stick with it if you feel a little lost at first. Go find Everything Volume 1: Grand Opening (issues #1-5) and join us back here again next week to break it all down! DC December continues! Christopher Cantwell is an Eisner Award nominee and one of the writers and creators of the TV show Halt and Catch Fire . Christopher joins Jimmy on the Cryptid Creator Corner to talk about Plastic Man No More (the trade is out April 8, 2025) as well as the brand new Challengers of the Unknown (issue #1 is out December 18, 2024). Christopher talks about this new series, working with artist Sean Izaakse, the history of the Challengers and what he loves about these characters. Plus, Jimmy and Christopher chat about Jimmy's favorite series that Christopher wrote: The Blue Flame (with Adam Gorham, Kurt Michael Russell, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou). This was such a fun conversation that you don't want to miss. Challengers of the Unknown From the publisher Throughout DC’s history, the Challengers of the Unknown have been on the front lines when it comes to investigating the strange and unusual. This December, these investigators of the weird make their DC All In debut with the new Challengers of the Unknown , a five-issue limited series written by Christopher Cantwell ( Plastic Man No More! ) with art by Sean Izaakse ( Green Arrow ). Spinning out of Absolute Power and the DC All In Special , the terror of the Darkseid shock wave has cascaded across the DC Universe…tearing open the very fabric of time and space itself! Only one band of super-scientists have the right stuff to challenge the fate of a universe: the Challengers of the Unknown. Ace Morgan, June Robbins, Prof Haley, Red Ryan, and Rocky Davis, adventurers “living on borrowed time,” run day-to-day operations for the Justice League’s Watchtower base in orbit above Earth, collaborating with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the League to seal the rifts that threaten the galaxy. But a mysterious foe from the Challengers’ past lurks in the shadows, and its connection to the Darkseid wave will put not only the Challengers, but all of the DC Universe on borrowed time. Plastic Man No More From the publisher Eel O’Brian might be a superhero now—but before he was anything else, he was a crook. Until the accident that turned him into the pliable Plastic Man, Eel was bad to the bone…and just because he no longer has bones doesn’t mean that’s not still true. When an incident on a Justice League mission leads to catastrophic cellular damage, Plastic Man discovers he just might be out of time to make amends for the past he’s tried hard to outrun—or to save the soul of his son, who (unfortunately for him) might have inherited more from dear old Dad than just his superpowers. As 2023 comes to an end, we decided to read and discuss a comic that's also about an ending, of sorts. Namor the Sub-Mariner: Conquered Shores by Christopher Cantwell, Pasqual Ferry, Matt Hollingsworth, and Joe Caramagna is a "The End"-type of story for Namor, one of Albert's most beloved superhero characters. Conquered Shores takes place in a far future after the Earth has endured massive trauma, which results in Atlantis becoming the dominant superpower as the planet is engulfed by the seas and melted ice caps. The superhero population has diminished, and Namor is one of the last remaining few with any agency. What choices will he make in this new world? Join us for our discussion of this five-issue miniseries! If you have any thoughts, comments, questions, or corrections, we're here. Feel free to hit us up on our socials, or email us!
