For the second episode of Budapest, I was joined by Cecilia Malmström — former MEP, European Commissioner, and Swedish EU Minister — one of the key figures in European Union trade policy over the past two decades. Trade was long conceived as a strategy to strengthen bonds between countries, and helped hundreds of millions come out of poverty. When did it become a means for aggressive foreign policies? Together with Cecilia, we explore international trade — its potential for the EU and beyond — despite the populist fantasy of self-sufficient national economies. In this episode: ∙ Trade as a weapon ∙ European commercial policy: what we are doing right or wrong ∙ The true impact of Donald Trump’s tariffs on our economies ∙ Which countries are still benefiting from WTO ∙ The legacy of populism on international trade With reason, not rage. Global trade is facing unprecedented challenges, from rising protectionism and geopolitical tensions to weak enforcement of international trade rules. While the EU remains committed to free trade, it must also navigate shifts in U.S. policy, a growing influence of China, and the urgent need for sustainability. To promote free trade and to maintain its influence in the global trading system, the EU must strengthen partnerships with emerging economies, uphold global trade norms, and respond to a volatile U.S. trade stance in a confident manner. Joining host Tom Parker is Cecilia Malmström, former EU Commissioner for Trade, who examines the future of international trade, the importance of like-minded coalitions, and how the EU can promote fair and sustainable trade policies. What are Sweden's main policy priorities during its EU Council Presidency? How will Sweden, as one of Europe's more free trading nations, navigate the turn to industrial policy in Europe and lead the charge in boosting European competitiveness? What ways is the European Union changing to adapt to an uncertain geopolitical and economic future? How influential is the EU Council Presidency and how will Sweden lead in Europe on issues, including Ukraine, the green transition, trade, security and democracy? On this episode of the #AtlanticDebrief, Ben Judah sits down with Cecilia Malmström, Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, to discuss the main issues facing Europe as Sweden embarks on its EU Council Presidency.
Former member of the European Commission and European Parliament Cecilia Malmström has negotiated on behalf of 27 member states at the WTO and navigated tricky transatlantic deals. On this special EU Explainer episode, Malmström examines the role the world can play in the Ukraine crisis through trade. Europe and the US are pivotal players in keeping goods flowing, and making sure food and other commodities are saving lives.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, or OECD, is celebrating it’s 60 anniversary this year. Since entering into force in 1961, the OECD has played a critical role in advancing multilateral solutions to global challenges. As the world continues to grapple with the COVID-19 crisis and other policy challenges, like climate change and global inequality, the OECD is in the process of selecting its next Secretary General. ICC speaks with one of the finalists for that position, the former European Union Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom.
