Bran is joined by Ashton Kutcher, an American actor, producer, and entrepreneur who rose to fame in the late 1990s. Born on February 7, 1978, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he initially pursued biochemical engineering at the University of Iowa before leaving to pursue modeling and acting. Kutcher gained widespread recognition for his role as Michael Kelso on the hit television sitcom *That '70s Show*, where his comedic timing and charm quickly made him a fan favorite. Building on his early success, Kutcher transitioned into film, starring in a mix of romantic comedies and dramas such as *Dude, Where's My Car?*, *The Butterfly Effect*, and *No Strings Attached*. He also became the creator and host of the MTV prank show *Punk'd*, which showcased his knack for blending humor with celebrity culture. Later, he returned to television in a leading role on the sitcom *Two and a Half Men*, further cementing his place in mainstream entertainment. Beyond acting, Kutcher has established himself as a savvy investor and entrepreneur. He co-founded the venture capital firm A-Grade Investments, backing major tech companies such as Airbnb, Uber, and Skype in their early stages. In addition, he is actively involved in philanthropy, particularly through his work with Thorn, an organization he co-founded to combat child exploitation and human trafficking. His multifaceted career reflects a blend of entertainment success and business acumen.

Apple has long been a pioneer on privacy, and has made that a central part of its marketing. So it was surprising to see privacy groups complain last month when it announced new features meant to combat child sexual abuse. The updates were intended to make a dent in the rapid proliferation of child sexual abuse material online — the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children logged 21.7 million reports of such material in 2020 alone. But because one of these updates involves software that would allow Apple to scan images on a user’s device, privacy groups worry about setting a dangerous precedent that would open the door to surveillance and censorship. In this conversation, Kara Swisher talks through the debate over balancing the protection of children and privacy with Julie Cordua, the chief executive of the child safety nonprofit Thorn, and Ashton Kutcher, a co-founder of the organization. They discuss the scale of child sexual exploitation online and the role that tech giants like Apple, Google and Facebook play in both the problem and the solution. Kutcher — who was an early defender of Apple’s recent update — also jumps in to note “the one thing Facebook has been amazing at.” You can find transcripts (posted midday) and more information for all episodes at nytimes.com/sway , and you can find Kara on Twitter @karaswisher .
