QUICK NOTE: We did have a minor audio issue towards the end, but we only lost a couple minutes of recording, and it wasn't anything important. We weren't sure at the time so you'll hear us say it was a shame we lost so much, but I listened back and we barely lost anytihng. Summary: We return for part 2 of Vojislav Šešelj, joined again by Gavrilo, who wrote the script for this episode as well. We pick up right where we left off, at his visit to America in 1989, and then continue on to the 90s, the breakup of Yugoslavia and the ensuing wars, his time in Serbian politics, and his trial for war crimes at The Hague. This episode is a lot less dense, as we got most of the background info needed out of the way in part one, and were free to get more into the crazy stuff, like his book titles. Gavrilo says trans rights btw. Photo is of Šešelj in sunglasses with a young Aleksandar Vučić, the current President of Serbia. We went way too long on this one, so we're splitting it into two parts. We decided to leave America for the first time and invited a guest on, my friend Gavrilo from Serbia (@BurekAuFromage on Letterboxd), who prepared us an episode on Vojislav Šešelj, a Serbian nationalist politician and war criminal. This episode covers his life up to 1989, and contains a lot of historical background. The more insane stuff will be in part 2. But there's still some weird stuff here, and also the historical context is very necessary. We're sorry this isn't the Mark Thatcher episode, that'll be in a few weeks. Here's a short list of the relevant names and terms in case you get confused: Battle of Kosovo - famous battle from the 1300s where Serbian principalities fought the Ottoman Empire, became important to the development of Serbian nationalism Fuad Muhić, Atif Purivatra - Muslim professors at the University of Sarajevo that Šešelj clashed with Alija Izetbegović - First president of an independent Bosnia Nenad Kecmanović - Serbian journalist/writer Branko Mikulić, Hamdija Pozderac - Bosnian leaders within Yugoslavia Brano Miljuš - Protege of Mikulić and Pozderac Milovan Đilas - Former aide to Tito, eventual dissident Stane Dolanc - Slovene leader in Yugoslavia, tasked with quelling nationalism Momčilo Đujić - Chetnik leader from WW2, Axis collaborator, active in Serbian emigre circles post-WW2
That's everywhere Vojislav Šešelj has guested so far.
