This week Latika Takes: The Podcast interviews Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the woman widely regarded as having won Belarus's elections in 2022, who now lives in exile in Lithuania. Tsikhanouskaya, a mother of two, discusses being an opposition activist, inspiring other exiled movements, a woman political leader in a patriarchal society. She discusses on the work with the Trump Administration in freeing political prisoners and the contrast between Belarusians and Russians in their perceptions of Western sanctions imposed as a result of the war in Ukraine. She reflects on the fatigue factor involving the war in Ukraine and how that is affecting populist politics across Europe. Finally, she addresses the statement released by her husband, Syarhei Tsikhanouski, after he accused her political office of withholding from him their joint Magnitsky Human Rights Award that they won at this month’s awards ceremony in London. Join us for a powerful discussion with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the leader of the Belarusian opposition and a global symbol of the fight for democracy. We'll delve into her journey from presidential candidate to exile, the ongoing struggle against authoritarianism in Belarus, and the challenges of rallying international support for democratic change. Gain unique insights into the resilience of the Belarusian people and the path forward for freedom and human rights in the region.
While the war in Ukraine rages on, another fight continues in its neighbour to the north, Belarus. In 2020, its dictator Alexander Lukashenko faced massive protests in the streets and is widely seen by the international community to have lost the presidential election to an unlikely opponent, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. Tsikhanouskaya ran in the place of her husband Siarhei, who was arrested by the authorities in May 2020. While Siarhei remains in prison in Belarus, Sviatlana, who was exiled almost immediately, leads the opposition from abroad. Her goal is to work with international allies to build the framework for a post-Lukashenko future for Belarus. She was in Canada this week for high-level meetings with the Government of Canada, allied ambassadors and the Belarusian community. She joined StrategyCorp's Garry Keller for a conversation on the challenges she faces, and what Canadians can do to support freedom and democracy in Belarus.
In the latest episode of Her & EU, Belarussian Opposition Leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya sat down with host Loredana Teodorescu to dive deep into her fight for change and democracy – and the high price she’s paid for doing so.
