Nomiki Konst speaks with Ewa Majewska, PhD, to discuss feminism as the bulwark against fascism as well as her book Feminist Antifascism: Counter-Publics of the Common . In this exciting, innovative work, Dr. Majewska proposes a specifically feminist politics of antifascism. Mixing theoretical discussion with engaging reflections on personal experiences, Majewska proposes what she calls “counterpublics of the common” and “weak resistance,” offering an alternative to heroic forms of subjectivity produced by neoliberal capitalism and contemporary fascism. Dr. Majewsa is a feminist philosopher of culture and a former Affiliated Fellow at the Institute of Cultural Inquiry (ICI) in Berlin, Germany. Since 2003 she has lectured at the Gender Studies at the University of Warsaw, after receiving her PhD in Warsaw, she was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (BBRG), working on theories of subjectivity and translation; in the years 2011 – 2013 she was the Adjunct Professor in the Institute of Culture at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland. In 2013/14 she was a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, Austria, in 2014-2016 she was a fellow at the ICI Berlin and between 2016-2019 – she was an adjunct Professor at the University of Warsaw, Poland. On today’s program, Nomiki Konst speaks with environmental and human rights attorney Steven Donziger about his ongoing fight for freedom after serving what is now the longest sentence ever given to an attorney for charges at the misdemeanor level in American history_._ His “crime”? Successfully holding Chevron accountable in court for the destruction of the environment and poisoning of over thirty-thousand members of Indigenous communities in Ecuador. Now he’s being prosecuted and sentenced to 6-months in prison on top of his already unprecedented 2+ years in home confinement, all by entities that have direct ties to Chevron and those with the power to end this injustice remain silent. Many however are not remaining silent, as last year 29 Nobel laureates described Chevron’s actions against Donziger as “judicial harassment” human rights campaigns described the actions as an example of “a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP), and just last month the UN Human Rights Body ruled that Steven’s house arrest violates international laws.
