As I mention in this episode, it’s possible the world may not have gotten to know Joni Mitchell the way it ultimately did without Judy Collins, who was an early champion of her work in New York’s Greenwich Village and whose covers of “Both Sides, Now,” “Chelsea Morning” and others helped put Joni in a position to continue soaring upwards. For those unfamiliar with the story: It was Judy who once got a call in the middle of the night from Al Kooper, who told her she simply must hear this new singer-songwriter. He put Joni on the phone, who sang “Both Sides, Now,” and Judy immediately recognized the magic. Judy has been a beautiful and inspiring force in the music world for 60 some years and she’s still out there, at 86, delighting audiences with her insight, charm and wisdom. I am honored to have been joined by a true legend in Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Judy Collins. We talked primarily about the ups and downs of emotional life, particularly given her experience of the catastrophic loss of her son Clark to suicide in 1992. She shares generously how she was able to survive such detestation, even managing to feel deeply close with her son in an ongoing way all these years later. As Judy wisely puts it, death ends a life, but not a relationship. Our time together highlights the preciousness of time and connection and the importance of knowing there is a way out, as suicide is so often a choice that comes out of feeling no way out. She shares her experience of making a suicide attempt, herself, when she was fourteen and facing the potential disappointment of her father. One of the most remarkable things about Judy’s way of surviving her son’s suicide was her ability to reach out to others for support and finding an ability to connect to what she termed ‘the gifts of catastrophic loss’. As she has done so many times musically, she turned the experiences of her heart into something beautiful and to be treasured. I am so grateful to her for taking time with me and bearing her heart and soul on this very important issue as we work to promote suicide prevention.

In 1967, Joni Mitchell broke up with Blues Project drummer Roy Blumenfeld and she ran into Al Kooper at a bar that night. Al walked her home and Joni sang some songs for him. He was so impressed with her music that he called friend Judy Collins at 2am to get her to take Joni to the Newport Folks Festival the next day. Judy said yes, but grumbled about being woken up. Joni's appearance at Newport kickstarted her career and Al helped her get a record contract. But you have to hear Al tell it.

Most people know the legend of Judy Collins - the blue-eyed beauty - who inspired Suite Judy Blue Eyes by Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills and Nash. In this candid chat with host Robin Milling, Judy talks about the stories that have shaped her musical history. Judy tells Robin about her on-going musical collaboration with Stills and their singing union on the CD Stills & Collins. After all these years, they are performing live together enriched even more by their friendship. She talks about what it's like to have songs written about her and the ones she discovered along the way like Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now that gave her Top 10 success. Along with those heady times there were demons to battle. Judy unabashedly shares her struggles with alcoholism and how she continues one day at a time to deal with the debilitating addiction that almost cost her career. At 79, Collins shows no signs of slowing down. She tells Robin about her future plans and what she hopes to accomplish in the worlds of music, books, and possibly even Broadway.
