Filmmaker Gus Van Sant joins Bill Maher for a candid conversation that pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to survive in Hollywood. Van Sant opens up about the scrappy, crowdfunded reality behind Dead Man’s Wire, studio politics, and why critics may have saved his career. The two dig into his iconic films (Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho, To Die For, Psycho) and trace the lineage of comedy from Lenny Bruce to Saturday Night Live – along with the strange psychology of actors and directors on set, including a jaw-dropping story about literally throwing rocks to get a performance. Director Jack Huston discusses his new film, Day of the Fight, with fellow Director Gus Van Sant in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses how he aimed to turn a typical fight story on its head, how he worked with his Cinematographer to capture the black and white look of the film, and finding an Actor that could convey the range of pathos between fighting and interpersonal melodrama that the role demanded. The film shows a day in the life of Mikey “Irish Mike” Flanigan, a champion boxer getting ready for his first fight since leaving prison. As he prepares for the most important fight of his life, he reconnects with the people he was closest to and tries to make things right. Do you ever stop and look at a New Yorker cartoon or a sardonic comic book and wonder, "Huh! I wonder what sort of deviant mind would create this"? Lucky for you, dear listener, there are at least three movies about such people--one fiction, two biopics. This week, with the release of Gus Van Sant's "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot" (about the late John Callahan), Chance and Noah look at movies about cynical cartoonists: Harvey Pekar in "American Splendor" and fictional writing duo Holden McNeil and Banky Edwards in "Chasing Amy." And big news! We got Gus Van Sant himself on for an interview (20:05-mark) --talking John Callahan, Joaquin Phoenix and the late Robin Williams. So stop doodling and give a listen!
