When we look elsewhere in nature, we find some pretty amazing animal architects. Species like ants, termites, prairie dogs, birds, and more have engineered some incredible structures. This week we look at how a few of these species have mastered physics to install air conditioning in their homes! Let's start Season 3 with a bang with a very exciting guest! In this episode, we have the wonderful and brilliant Dr Raven Baxter, aka Raven the Science Maven joining the Long Covid Hope Podcast. Raven talks about her full recovery from Long Covid, how it took a lot longer to cognitively than previously discussed and what she used to get herself back to where she was pre-Covid. We talk about so many important issues, such as Raven's recent new job at Mount Sinai using her skills to help other long haulers as a health communicator, as well as the inequalities facing people of colour in healthcare. Unfortunately, Raven was reinfected during this episode, but insisted on still appearing (and despite Sarah's many offers of rescheduling!) She is now back to full health, thankfully! This episode is also infused with Reiki from Sarah. If you are interested and would like to accept the healing, simply state out loud that you welcome the healing energy. If not, never mind! Dianna is the always enthusiastic, ever curious, creator and host of the highly successful YouTube channel Physics Girl. She’s especially passionate about science, education and sparking a lifelong curiosity in science for girls and minorities. Hawaii born and raised, Dianna was inspired by physics as a girl. Thanks to encouragement by her teachers and family, she pursued a physics degree at MIT. She subsequently explored careers in scientific research (at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics), software engineering (at General Electric) and science outreach (at the Reuben H Fleet Science Center and the University of California San Diego) before committing to the Physics Girl YouTube channel full-time. Dianna loves sharing her curiosity with her 1.3 million subscribers and beyond, and she was recently named as one of Forbes 30 under 30. Her time is split between writing, filming and producing content for her YouTube channel; and public speaking engagements at conferences, universities, classrooms, and further afield. She lives in San Diego and loves to get out on the water surfing. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
PhysicsGirl Dianna Cowern is your average Forbes 30 Under 30, award-winning YouTube legend who got her start in a tiny Hawaiian school -- which is to suggest that nothing about Dianna’s impressive career path is any sort of accident. With 2 million subscribers and over 150 million views, Dianna has become one of Science YouTube’s most prolific figures, and she’s inspired a generation of girls to go further in physics. Where would she be without that Neil deGrasse Tyson DVD series?! Dianna had a series of teachers who helped drive her interest in physics, but the key might’ve been her own broad interests from music to tennis. Most everything in her life seems to combine into science communication, and it’s a solid example of ‘System 1 and System 2’ thinking. But then it’s mud puddle time. Dianna made an excellent video showing the world’s only moving mud puddle, which is threatening parts of California en route to the Salton Sea. Is there any hope? Kevin thinks “there’s nothing you can do to stop it.” At 20 feet per year, it’s hard to disagree. And it’s one more example of taking a seemingly-mundane subject and making it amazing, which Dianna does so well. She’s always excited, and part of that is because she’s talking to other people who are excited, too. Like making a cloud in your mouth, getting pumped about the ocean, or paving a way on YouTube for herself and others when there are dozens of reasons to quit. Congratulations to Dianna for getting back to surfing, and thanks to each and every one of our Patrons who make this show happen every week! Welcome to this new extension of the Geektown Radio podcast! As I mentioned on the main Geektown Radio show earlier this week, this year I've decided to separate out the interview segments of the show into their own podcast series, which we are calling the Geektown: Behind The Scenes podcast. This allows me to bring you more interviews over the course of the week! On our first new who we have Dianna Cowen, or as she's better known to her 1.3 million YouTube subscribers, Physics Girl! Dianna has a fabulous and entertaining YouTube channel which adventures into the physical sciences with experiments, demonstrations, and cool new discoveries. However, the latest project she has been involved with is ' The Edge of Science ' , a new special collaboration between YouTube and the BBC. Produced by BBC Studios Science Unit, Cambridge University scholar, podcaster and writer Rick Edwards enlists the help of Colin Furze, Dianna, and other passionate YouTube science creators to put the most ‘out there’ ideas in science to the test in an ambitious range of stunts and experiments. In this special, they explore the science behind levitation investigating whether science can make the impossible possible. The intrepid team head off to meet the scientists behind cutting edge research into acoustic and quantum levitation and put their theories to the test, with a range of stunts that will challenge our understanding of the world as we know it. They’re even going to attempt to break a world record along the way. The show culminates with Rick attempts to levitate using the latest in quantum technology hoverboard. Rick also hands the board over to professional skateboard athlete Rianne Evans who puts it through its paces, 'Back To The Future 2' style. I had a chance to sit down and chat with Dianna about working on 'The Edge of Science', along with her work as Physics Girl on her YouTube channel. We even go into some of the science behind 'Star Trek'. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown . Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
